We were honored to welcome Stacy Mantle to Golladay School for a special visit and tour. Stacy is an accomplished writer, former educator, and the founder of PetsWeekly.com. In addition to her work as an author and animal advocate, she is currently researching and writing about innovative education models and alternative learning environments for children.
As part of her research, Stacy requested that we speak with several of our students in an informal, unscripted setting. Her thoughtful questions sparked meaningful responses, offering a glimpse into the hearts and minds of the young learners at our school.
We are deeply grateful for her interest in our program and her commitment to exploring diverse approaches to education. It was a pleasure to share the Golladay experience with someone who so clearly values creativity, student voice, and lifelong learning.
We moved our school to another location (again) and we came to get our chickens to move them too.
We practice freedom within limits. This allows the children to walk around, work outside, visit with friends, help each other, and choose the order of things that they get things done. This helps teach accountability, time management, and responsibility. The goal is for them to prepare themselves for life outside of school.
This is our 3-6 year old class. They love having fun while learning.
During the Fall of 2023, the project learning for the children was the body. These consisted of learning about the body, medicines, exercise, and treating injuries through bandaging, casting, wrapping, and suturing.
This Christmas season we focused on the Savior Jesus Christ and had a live nativity. This nativity was not the typical reenactment as is commonly seen, but it was a live nativity where the students where dressed representing people in the past. They mingled with the visitors and were able to share information regarding what actually took place during the nativity; this way the students were able to research and learn a little more in depth about the birth of Jesus Christ.
A few interesting points of discussion -
Jesus' birth was not in December. December 25 was used so as to be the same as the Sun god Ra.
We don't know how many wise men there were.
The wise men probably arrived after Jesus was one year old and probably before 2 years old.
Riding on the very back of a donkey might have been a much smoother ride than what we think.
Mary was a very common name. Since it was prophesied that Jesus' mother would be named Mary, usually each household that had a daughter had one of them named Mary.
Stables were typically part of the house, usually a side room or the first floor where the animals could get out of the cold.
The children learned about exercise and sports. We learned stretching, body weight exercises, light weight exercises, and different sports. We play soccer, pool, ultimate frisbee, tennis, pickleball, volleyball, and dodgeball. Their favorite . . . . . dodgeball.
The kids made electric go karts from scratch. They started by making a model and then piece by piece they worked to replicate the model into a working go kart to race at the end of the semester. It was a lot of work, but a lot was learned and it felt great to accomplish the task. If you don't have time to watch the entire video, Here is the breakdown.

Brian and Sheyda bought an empty 4 acre lot in early 2021 for the purpose of building a school on it. Prices skyrocketed and it has just been a vacant lot since, except for the fruit trees that they regularly plant there. They saved enough money in 2023 to slowly build a wall around the property. This project took from January through September 9, 2023. Four days later an unprecedented storm (we say tornado) came through.
